WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University men’s tennis team defeated John Carroll University 6-3 Saturday afternoon in the Clements Recreation Center.
The Cardinals move to 3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), 5-10 overall. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks fall to 4-10 overall, 2-3 in the OAC.
Significant rainfall in the central Ohio area forced the two teams indoor, and the Cardinals took advantage of the fast indoor courts.
The team of senior Steven Albert and freshman Kendall Coffman took second doubles (9-7), while sophomores Ryan Shutt and Tyler Gibbons claimed third doubles (8-4) to give Otterbein a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.
Albert, Shutt, and Coffman all built on their doubles success to earn singles victories.
Albert posted an impressive straight-set win in second singles (6-1, 6-4), while his doubles partner Coffman won fourth singles (6-1, 6-2).
Shutt helped secure the match with his victory in third singles. After he won a tightly contested first set, 7-6, Shutt dropped the second 6-2, before cruising to a 6-0 victory in the third set to clinch the win.
Freshman Sam Lawless rounded out the Cardinals successful afternoon with a 6-2, 6-0 win in fifth singles.
Otterbein will return to action this Wednesday, April 18, when they host Marietta College. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
