WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Otterbein University baseball suffered a sweep at the hands of visiting John Carroll University Sunday afternoon, falling by scores of 4-1 and 5-4 at Fishbaugh Field.
Otterbein now falls to 16-14 on the season and 3-7 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, while the victories move JCU to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in the league.
Junior Dominic Porretta retired the first eight John Carroll batters to start the day, but the Streaks eventually got things going with two runs during a late rally in the third before adding another in the fourth.
An RBI from freshman Billy Harkenrider got the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but the Otterbein offense was not able to muster any more runs despite putting two runners on in the final at-bat.
Harkenrider went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate in game one. Porretta allowed three earned runs over his complete-game effort, but fell to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
The Cardinals jumped ahead 3-0 early in game two, but JCU fought back and drew even at 3-3 after plating two runs in the sixth, followed by one more in the top of the seventh.
Otterbein left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, and fell behind 5-3 in the top of the 8th after a two-run homer from JCU’s Mitchell Herringshaw.
The Cards plated one run in the bottom of the eighth, and put two runners on in the ninth before falling short.
Junior Scott Staarmann went 3 for 5 and scored three runs in game two, and finished the day a combined 5 for 7.
Senior Kevin Castle gave a 2 for 4 effort at the dish in the second game, while David Cydrus allowed three earned runs over his seven innings of work on the hill.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday afternoon, hosting a doubleheader with No. 1 ranked Marietta College at 1 p.m.
