Men's Tennis Knocks Off Marietta

WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University men’s tennis team defeated Marietta College 8-1 Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals also announced they have canceled their match with Central State.

The Cards improve to 6-10 overall, 4-2 in the OAC. Meanwhile, the Pioneers fall to 3-3 in the OAC, 7-5 overall.

Otterbein got off to a great start against Marietta after they claimed all three doubles matchups.

Senior Ryan Roberts and sophomore Andrew Sutter earned a 8-3 win at first singles and senior Steven Albert and freshman Kendall Coffman took the second spot 8-3. Rounding out the Cardinals successful doubles play were sophomores Tyler Gibbons and Ryan Shutt who claimed an 8-1 victory at third doubles.

Otterbein carried the momentum of doubles play into singles competition by winning five of the six matches. The Cardinals top four singles players all won in straight sets.

Roberts earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at first singles, while Shutt picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory of his own in second singles.

Coffman claimed a 6-4. 6-3 win in third singles, and freshman Sam Lawless won in the fourth spot, 6-2, 6-3.

Sutter pulled out a win in fifth singles to round out the Cardinals scoring (5-7, 6-3, 1-0).

Otterbein also announced yesterday that they have cancelled their Thursday afternoon match with Central State.

The Cardinals will now return to action this Saturday, April 21, when they travel to New Concord to take on Muskingum University. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
