BEXLEY, OHIO – Otterbein University played to a doubleheader split at rival Capital University Sunday afternoon, falling 5-3 in game one before taking the second outing 7-6 in 12 innings.

The split puts Otterbein at 19-17 this season and 6-10 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC ) play, and knocks the Cardinals out of contention for a spot in the upcoming four-team conference tournament.

Capital moves to 4-11 in OAC play and 15-20 overall.

Otterbein posted a pair of runs to cut a 5-1 deficit in half during its final at-bat of game one, but eventually fell short in losing 5-3.

The Cardinals rebounded quickly in game two, plating a run in the first inning and two more in the second to open a 3-1 advantage.

Capital pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but a Billy Harkenrider single up the middle and a 2-RBI single down the left field line from Wes Meadows helped the Cardinals plate three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Crusaders began to chip away at the Cardinal lead, plating one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to force extra innings.

Both sides remained locked at 6-6 until the top of the 12th inning, when a Harkenrider single to the left side scored junior Scott Staarmann and eventually proved to be the difference.

Harkenrider and freshman Caleb Woodson combined to hit 8 of 11 with three RBI in the win, while Staarmann went an impressive 4 for 6 with a pair of runs scored.

Junior Matt Frey picked up his second victory of the season after providing relief for starter David Cydrus, who struck out nine batters over his nine innings of work.

Sophomore Thomas Linder tallied a hit in each of the two games on the day, running his national-best hitting streak to 24 games.

Otterbein next travels to play Transylvania (Ky.) on Wednesday, May 2 for a single, nine-inning game. Starting time in Lexington is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
