BEXLEY, OHIO – The Otterbein University men’s tennis team wrapped up their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of victories over Muskingum University and Capital University.

The Cardinals shutout Muskingum 8-0 Thursday before they knocked off Capital 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.

With the two victories, Otterbein concludes their 2011-12 regular season with a 9-10 overall record. Their 7-2 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) has earned them the No. 3 seed in the OAC Tournament.

In their win over Capital, Otterbein took two of the three doubles matches to enter singles with the lead.

The team of senior Steven Albert and sophomore Kendall Coffman won second doubles 8-5. Picking up the other Cardinal win were sophomores Ryan Shutt and Tyler Gibbons. They won third doubles 8-5.

Capital managed to claim both first and second singles against Otterbein, but the Cardinals won the rest of their matchups to earn the 6-3 victory.

Shutt picked up an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles, while Coffman also had a strong performance at fourth singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Sophomore Andrew Sutter won fifth singles (6-2, 6-3) and freshman Dustin Goldman rounded out Otterbein’s winners with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) victory at sixth singles.

"I knew from Capital's results that they matched up well against us," Head Men's Tennis Coach Mark Anderson said. "But, our guys stepped up big and pulled out some tough matches to win the match. It was an outstanding team effort. I think having this difficult match will be good for us as we go into the Conference Tournament."

Otterbein’s match with Muskingum, which was a reschedule, was moved inside to the compact Zanesville Fieldhouse due to rainfall. Because of that, all of the singles matches were played to eight.

The Cardinals swept singles competition from the Muskies while claiming every match by more than five points.

Senior Ryan Roberts claimed first singles (8-0) and classmate Steven Albert took second singles (8-3).

Shutt at third singles, Coffman at fourth singles, and Sutter at fifth singles all claimed 8-0 wins for Otterbein in the match.

In doubles competition, the team of Roberts and Albert won first doubles (8-1), Shutt and Coffman took second doubles (8-0), and Gibbons and freshman Sam Lawless claimed third doubles (8-2).

Goldman led his opponent 4-0 when the two teams ran out of time, resulting in the 8-0 score.

The Cardinals will begin postseason play this week when they host a first round match on either Tuesday, May 1, or Wednesday, May 2. Stay tuned to otterbeincardinals.com for more details. For more information about the OAC Tournament click here.
