WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Otterbein University baseball played to a split with visiting Heidelberg University Tuesday afternoon, suffering a 10-7 defeat in game one before bouncing back with a 7-5 win in a shortened game two.
Otterbein (15-9, 2-2 OAC) went ahead 2-0 early after RBIs from Jimmy Waterwash and Thomas Linder, but Heidelberg (14-9, 3-1 OAC) posted two runs in the fourth inning to draw even.
The Cardinals wasted no time regaining the lead, batting around in the bottom of the inning en route to four runs and a 6-2 lead. Freshman Zach Thompson started the scoring with a sacrifice fly RBI, followed by junior Wes Meadows drawing a walk with the bases loaded before RBIs from Linder and starting pitcher Greg Moomaw.
The Student Princes drew to within 6-5 in the sixth frame, and threatened to take the lead before junior Matt Frey came on in relief to escape the inning with a double-play ground ball.
The Cards added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, but unfortunately fell victim to Heidelberg scoring five runs off three different Otterbein pitchers in the last inning en route to the tough defeat.
Linder went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs during game one, with freshman Billy Harkenrider going 2 for 4 and crossing the plate three times. Jimmy Waterwash added a 2 for 4 effort at the dish, driving in one run.
Heidelberg took a brief 1-0 lead in game two before the Otterbein offense erupted in the second inning, batting around the lineup and recording six runs.
Freshman shortstop Sean Kettering bumped the margin to 7-2 with his first career home run in the third inning, and Otterbein maintained the lead before the game was called due to darkness in the middle of the sixth frame.
Linder continued his hot streak in game two, going 2 for 2 with a walk. Kettering posted two hits and two runs scored while Caleb Woodson delivered two RBIs.
Otterbein remains at home to finish out the week, hosting a doubleheader with Ohio Northern University Friday at 1 p.m.
