Box Score
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Led by a strong pitching effort that posted 18 strikeouts, the Cardinal baseball team earned a 9-0 win over Ohio Christian University Friday afternoon at VA Memorial Stadium.
Otterbein University improves to 2-1 this season, and notches their second shutout victory over the Blazers in as many weeks.
The Cardinal pitching staff was clicking as freshman starter Adam Collier (2-0) limited Ohio Christian to just three hits in five innings, while striking out nine and walking just two.
Seniors Dominic Poretta and David Cydrus finished off the Blazers, pitching two innings apiece and combining to strikeout nine. After Poretta allowed a leadoff double in the sixth, both he and Cydrus combined to no-hit Ohio Christian for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore Jordan Ashbrook led the Cards at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored.
Otterbein got on the board early when freshman Tyler Kent led off the bottom of the first with a triple to center field. Senior Wes Meadows knocked in Kent with a groundout to third to give the Tan and Cardinal a 1-0 lead from which they did not look back.
The Cards extended their lead to 2-0 in the second. With sophomore Sean Kettering at third, classmate Jimmy Waterwash hit a slow roller towards the third baseman Trevor Whitesed. Whitesed came home with the throw, but Kettering beat it out to extend the Otterbein lead.
The Cardinals added two in the sixth before they broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning to cruise to the victory.
Otterbein will return to the diamond Wednesday, March 6, when they head to Dayton to take on NCAA Division I foe Wright State University. The two teams will play one nine-inning game with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
