FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Otterbein University baseball team kicked off its spring trip in blazing fashion, winning its first five outings to move to 9-1 on the season.
The Cardinals have gotten ahead early in every game, allowing the pitching staff some breathing room to operate successfully.
Otterbein took a twinbill from University of Wisc.-Stout on day one, winning by scores of 9-3 and 5-3. The Cards plated four runs in the second inning of game one, and five runs in the first inning of game two.
A trio of senior hurlers led the pitching charge on day one. Senior David Cydrus gave a complete-game effort in the opener, striking out seven and allowing just three hits. Matt Frey grabbed the win in the second game while Dominic Poretta tossed three innings of shutout ball for the save.
Tyler Kent, Wes Meadows, and Thomas Linder all recorded multi-hit games on the day, while Linder, Jordan Ashbrook, and Chad Webster all finished with a multi-RBI effort as well.
Otterbein dominated Lasell College, 7-0, on day two behind a shutdown performance from Meadows on the hill. The Marion native sat down 10 batters over his seven innings of work, scattering just three hits in the process. Kent and shortstop Sean Kettering each homered in the game.
The Cards topped Nichols College, 9-3, on the third day as they reached base 18 times in 40 at-bats.
Linder, Kettering, Ashbrook, Tyler Rose, and Nich Pitzer combined for 10 hits and nine RBI. Sophomore Taylor Ellis notched his first collegiate victory on the hill, allowing just four runners to reach base over his five innings.
Otterbein rounded out the first half of the trip with a 6-2 victory over Lasell in a game that was postponed from the day before due to weather. The game resumed in the second inning, with standout freshman Adam Collier taking the reigns on the hill.
Collier allowed just one earned run over six innings of work, moving to 3-0 on the season as a result. Kent, Kettering, Meadows, and Billy Harkenrider all had two-hit games, while Kettering blasted his second home run in as many days en route to a three-RBI performance.
The Cards have two days off before returning to action Friday morning with a doubleheader against Plymouth State University. Start time is slated for 10 a.m.
