WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Behind a 7th-inning walk-off double by senior Wes Meadows, the Otterbein University baseball team swept Wilmington College, winning 4-3 and 16-5, Wednesday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field.

The wins improve the Cardinals to 6-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), 19-7 overall. Meanwhile, the losses drop the Quakers to 4-21 overall, 1-7 in league action.

The Cardinals rebounded after a 16-9 loss to the University of Rio Grande on the previous day.

Otterbein was down to its final three outs, trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh. After sophomore Jimmy Waterwash reached on a fielder’s choice, both freshman Tyler Kent and sophomore Billy Harkenrider walked to load the bases up and set the stage for Meadows.

Meadows scorched a double to left, clearing the bases and giving the Cardinals a walk-off win.

Meadows helped his own cause at the plate, picking up his fifth win of the season on the mound. He threw all seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out five.

The Cardinals took a much different path to victory in game two, winning 16-5 behind 12 base hits.

Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, but Otterbein came right back with a three-run first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

After tacking on a pair in the third to go up 5-2, the Cardinals put the game out of reach with a nine-run fifth that was highlighted by a three-run homer by Waterwash to go up 14-5.

Sophomore Taylor Ellis (4-0) picked up the win for the Tan and Cardinal in game two, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four.

Sophomore Jordan Ashbrook led Otterbein in the second game, collecting five RBI with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

Meadows finished the day 5 for 8 in the two games, with four RBI and three runs scored to go along with his performance on the mound in game one.

The Cardinals are back on the diamond Thursday, April 11, for a single game with Ohio Wesleyan University. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
