MARIETTA, Ohio – The Otterbein University baseball team was swept by No. 6 Marietta College Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-1 and 10-1 in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill.

The losses drop the Cardinals to 19-11 overall this season, 6-6 OAC. The Pioneers, two-time defending NCAA Division III National Champions, improve to 10-2 in league play and 20-7 overall.

The Otterbein bats could not muster much offense in their 5-1 game one loss. The Cardinals were limited to just two hits by Marietta starter Evan Brockmeier, who struck out four and did not issue any walks. A pinch-hit solo blast by sophomore Jordan Ashbrook was the only noise Otterbein made in the game and helped them avoid a shutout.

It was a tough day on the mound for senior Wes Meadows (5-1), who took the loss in game one for the Cards. Although he struck out six in five innings of work, he allowed five runs on eight hits and allowed four free-passes to the Pioneer lineup.

Otterbein fell behind early in game two and was not able to generate enough offense to keep up with Marietta in their 10-1 game two loss.
The Pioneers scored the game’s first nine runs before the Cardinal offense could respond. Otterbein scattered four hits in the contest, notably a solo home run by Meadows.

Sophomore Taylor Ellis (4-1) was charged with the loss for the Cards. He allowed nine runs (six earned) on nine hits and walked a pair. Otterbein as a team was charged with five errors in the second game.

The Cardinals will be right back at it, hosting a single nine inning game with Wittenberg University Thursday, April 18. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
