MASON, Ohio – The Cardinal men’s tennis team was defeated 5-0 by Ohio Northern University in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Title match Saturday morning at the Lindner Tennis Center.
Otterbein University (16-7) fell behind early when the Polar Bears (18-4) claimed all three doubles matchups to take a 3-0 lead into singles competition.
Northern clinched the match with the first two decisions in singles play to take the title. Unfortunately for Otterbein, freshman Will Willson had a 6-4, 2-0 lead at No. 1 singles, and three other Cardinals were battling back after losing their first sets.
The OAC Championship gives Ohio Northern, who ranks 19th in the ITA Central Region rankings, an automatic-bid into the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament.
Otterbein has had a solid turnaround under fifth-year head coach Mark Anderson. The Cardinals, who won 25 games combined the last three seasons, posted an impressive 16-win campaign this year and are not losing any member of this year’s squad to graduation.
