Cardinals Suffer 73-56 Loss at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – Otterbein University dropped a conference road game Saturday afternoon, coming up shy in a 73-56 loss at Baldwin Wallace University in Ursprung Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-1 OAC) opened the game on an 11-0 run, but Otterbein settled in with a 12-1 run of its own to close within a point after a Bryan Mackenzie layup.

The Cardinals trailed by just three after Mackenzie buried a pair of free throws with 7:57 remaining in the period, but Baldwin Wallace answered with a 12-0 run before ultimately grabbing a 36-26 halftime lead.

Otterbein (1-5, 0-2 OAC) trimmed the deficit down to eight points early in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets managed to quickly bump the lead back to double digits and keep the cushion above 10 points the rest of the way.

Freshman Matt Hughes led Otterbein in scoring for the second-straight game with 14 points, while Mackenzie and Jake Phillis chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Christian Meister had nine off the bench while forward Marshall Crum scored eight.

Zach Warner came off the BW bench to score 15, leading five Yellow Jackets in double figures on the afternoon.

Otterbein, 39 percent, out-shot the Yellow Jackets by limiting them to a 34 percent output, but the hosts connected on nine trifectas compared to just three for the Cardinals. BW was also 24 of 31 from the free-throw line as a team.

The Cardinals will have the middle of the week off for final exams before hosting the University of Mount Union next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
