Match ResultsWESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's tennis team kept its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) hopes alive, edging Ohio Northern University, 5-4, Wednesday at home.
With the win, Otterbein improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. The Polar Bears, defending OAC regular-season and tournament champions, dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
"It would have been easy for the team to be down after the Baldwin Wallace match," said head coach Mark Anderson. "But the team played strong and smart througout today's match, earning an excellent win over perennial powerhouse Ohio Northern."
The Cardinals took an early 2-1 lead after winning first and third doubles. Will Willson and David Seckel cruised to an 8-1 win at first doubles while Tyler Gibbons and Kendall Coffman won 8-4 at third doubles.
In singles action, Otterbein won on three courts: two, four and five.
Coffman, the lone Cardinal to go 2-0 on the day, put the Cardinals over the top by winning fourth singles for the team's fifth point. He lost the first set, 4-6, but came back to win the next two, 6-3, 6-3.
Ryan Shutt won second singles, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0, while Zach McDivitt took fifth singles, 6-4, 6-0.
Otterbein remains at home in its next match, taking on John Carroll University Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. The Blue Streaks, 7-6 overall, hold down the top spot in the OAC with a 4-0 record.
