Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal baseball team picked up a non-conference victory Thursday afternoon, pulling away late for a 10-5 triumph over Penn State-Behrend at Fishbaugh Field.
Otterbein, now 23-13 this season, will close out its 2014 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader with the University of Mount Union. Thomas Linder, Evan Whitten, Steve Swiger and Oskar Thorsberg will be recognized prior to start time as part of Senior Day.
PSU-Behrend jumped ahead early, plating one run in the first before another in the fifth gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals drew even in the sixth behind the bat of junior Jake Simmerman, who launched a two-run homer over the left-field fence to tie the game at 2-2. It was his seventh home run of the season.
An RBI-double down the right-field line from freshman David Lemley put Otterbein on top later in the frame, and the Cards eventually blew the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Included in the inning was an RBI-double from Mark Walton before junior Sean Kettering catapulted his ninth long-ball of the year with a grand slam to left-center.
Freshman Peyton Ross went 3 for 5 on the day with a pair of runs scored, while Simmerman and leadoff man Taylor Hutchison each hit safely twice.
Sophomore right-hander Jordon Mally remained perfect on the season, surrendering just two runs over seven innings in moving to 5-0. He struck out five batters and walked just three.
