Cardinals Swept by Mount Union in Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University baseball team closed out its 2014 season Saturday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field, dropping both games of a doubleheader with the University of Mount Union in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action.

The Cardinals, ending the spring schedule at 23-15 and 7-11 in OAC play, fell 8-7 in game one before another close loss, 4-2, in the second affair.

Otterbein fell behind in game one after six Mount Union runs in the top of the third. The Cardinals would respond, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning before a four-run fourth tied the game. Included in the frame was a sac-fly RBI from senior Oskar Thorsberg and the first-career home run for classmate Thomas Linder.

The Raiders (24-10, 10-8 OAC) would vault back ahead in the sixth inning, scoring twice before hanging on down the stretch for the win.

Linder, Tyler Kent and Mark Walton each tallied two hits in the game while Sean Kettering and Jake Simmerman both drove in two runs.

Otterbein took an early 1-0 lead in game two behind an RBI-double from Thorsberg, only to see Mount Union post two runs in the next at-bat to seize a lead. A sac-fly RBI from Cardinal first baseman Jake Simmerman later knotted the game at 2-2 heading to the fourth.

Otterbein starting pitcher Taylor Ellis, making his first appearance in nearly a month (injury), gave the team five solid innings before the bullpen took over. The Purple Raiders eventually connected on a two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth inning that would ultimately be the difference-making runs.

The Cards got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a fielder's choice putout would end the game and the afternoon.

Ellis allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in his five innings of work, striking out two and walking just one. Kent gave a 2 for 3 effort at the dish in addition to making a handful of impressive catches out in centerfield.

Thorsberg, Linder, Steve Swiger and Evan Whitten were all recognized prior to start time of game one as part of Senior Day.
