Cards Extend Record-Breaking Seasons into OAC Finals

Women vs. John Carroll Match Results
Men vs. Ohio Northern Match Results

MASON, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's and women's tennis teams extended their record-breaking seasons with a pair of wins in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament today at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Both teams will be playing for the tournament championship Saturday with the winners receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

The women's team defeated John Carroll University, 5-1, today and will face second-seeded Ohio Northern University, 10 a.m., Saturday. The men's team, a 5-2 winner over Ohio Northern University, will take on second-seeded Baldwin-Wallace University at 2 p.m.

The teams will be facing their most formidable opponents of the tournament.

The women's teams squeaked by the Polar Bears earlier this season, earning a 5-4 win in Ada April 8. The match came down to a tie-breaker at second singles which Otterbein's Sammi Kruger won 9-7.

For the men, Baldwin Wallace was the lone conference loss for the Cardinals this season. The Yellow Jackets won that one, 5-4, at home April 5. Baldwin Wallace took an early 2-1 lead in doubles, and the match came down to the last two matches played in singles.

The women's team tied the school record for most wins in a season, 19, set in 2010, in its semifinal win over John Carroll.

Otterbein led, 2-1, after doubles with Julie Stroyne and Kruger winning on court one, 8-1, and Rylie Markle and Kelsey Leachko taking court three, 8-0.

Stroyne kept the ball rolling in singles, winning court one, 6-1, 6-3, and Markle followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six. Kruger finished off the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles.

The men's squad set a school record for wins in a season, 17, in its win over Ohio Northern.

The Cardinals took all three matches in doubles.

Will Willson and David Seckel were the first to finish, winning first doubles, 8-1. Ryan Shutt and Zach McDivitt followed with an 8-2 win at second doubles, and Kendall Coffman and Tyler Gibbons finished it off with an 8-5 win on court three.

The Cardinals closed out the win with victories on courts one and five. Willson won first singles, 6-1, 6-2, and McDivitt took fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2.

The women's team will be shooting for its sixth OAC tournament championship, having won in 1986, 1995, 1996, 2001 and 2003. The men's team has won the OAC tournament championship twice, in 1943 and 2002. Both programs will be vying for their first trip to the NCAA's.
