Match ResultsSTEUBENVILLE, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's tennis team pulled out a tough 5-4 win at Franciscan University Sunday in Steubenville.
Â
"Due to our No. 1 player (Will Willson) having a sprained ankle, the players knew they would have to step up, figuratively and literally, and that's exactly what they did in beating a solid Franciscan team," said Otterbein head coach Mark Anderson.
Â
The Cardinals won first and third doubles, and first, second and sixth singles.
Â
"David Seckel won twice, at first doubles with the help of a very strong performance by Perry Williams, and first singles," Anderson said.
Â
Seckel took first singles in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2, and first doubles, 9-7.
Â
Kendall Coffman won second singles, 6-0, 6-4, and Sam Lawless won sixth singles. Jake Devore and Ben Keen took third doubles, 8-6.
Â
"All the players played well, with Bren Woodly and Perry Williams taking their opponents at third and fifth singles, respectively, to three sets," Anderson said. "I am confident this win will help us play well in Florida against extremely tough competition, including a D-I school and a D-II school."
Â
Otterbein is scheduled to play four matches in Orlando, Fla., beginning with Saint John's University March 2 before returning to open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play March 21 at the University of Mount Union. Otterbein is defending OAC regular-season and tournament champions.
