Cards Drop a Heartbreaker to Visiting Baldwin Wallace

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio--The Otterbein University men's basketball team traded leads with the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets in the Rike Center Saturday night. The outcome wasn't what the Cardinals wanted as they fell, 70-67.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals fell to 3-18 overall and 2-12 in the OAC.

Otterbein's biggest lead came with just under six minutes left in the game at 59-54. After a timeout, Baldwin Wallace went on a 7-0 run to take the lead with a little under four minutes remaining.

The two teams would experience seven lead changes over the next three minutes, leading to a 67-67 tie with 39 seconds left in the game.

The Yellow Jackets held on to the ball for the next 36 seconds, leading to a layup from senior forward Matt Dennis with three seconds left. Dennis also made a follow-up free throw, giving Baldwin Wallace a 70-67 lead.

After an Otterbein timeout, the Cardinals went for a half-court pass to senior forward Marshall Crum. Crum, in an attempt to get the ball to freshman point guard Darrell Miller III, committed a backcourt violation, leading to the turnover. The Yellow Jackets would hold on for the victory.

Despite the outcome, head coach Todd Adrian was pleased with the team's attitude and hustle.

"To give all of our guys' credit, they really bought in to knowing that it wasn't just talent and ability that makes a difference," Adrian said. "It's everything."

Sophomore forward Grant Fenner led the Cardinals with 16 points and seven rebounds. Crum put up 14 points along with five rebounds. Miller was the only other Cardinal with double-digit points, racking up 10.

Otterbein committed a season-low 13 turnovers in the game, much to the pleasure of Adrian.

"We had our season low for turnovers, and that's a big deal," Adrian said. "That's the way that we're going to play for a long time. If our guys can believe that, the rest of this year is going to be a lot of fun."

The Cardinals next game will be against the Quakers of Wilmington College this Wednesday in Wilmington. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
