Otterbein's Comeback Falls Short in 5-4 Loss at Capital

Match Results

BEXLEY, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's tennis team took host Capital University down to the wire before losing, 5-4, Wednesday on the Bexley campus.

The Cardinals dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Capital improved to 6-3 and 1-0 in the OAC.

"We knew going into this match that it would be a battle and it was, coming down to the last court," said Otterbein head coach Mark Anderson. "We got off to a slow start, losing two of the three doubles matches. But the guys were determined to make a strong match of it and they did, almost pulling off a tremendous comeback."

Kendall Coffman and Ben Keen pulled off a dramatic win at No. 3 doubles, coming back from a 7-3 deficit to win 9-7. Will Willson and David Seckel went the distance at No. 1 doubles before losing to the Crusaders, 9-8, in a tiebreaker. Zach McDivitt and Perry Williams dropped No. 2 doubles by an 8-4 score.

The Cardinals bounced back in singles play, winning on courts six, three and five to knot the score at 4-4. Capital's Dale Booher put it away for the Crusaders with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Seckel in the final match of the day.

Coffman won both of his matches Wednesday, taking third singles, 6-2, 6-2, in addition to his win at third doubles. McDivitt won on court five, 6-2, 7-5, and Sam Lawless breezed through sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0.

"I'm confident today's match will motivate the players to work even harder to be ready for the rest of the OAC season."

The Cardinals will be off one week before resuming conference action at Marietta College April 1.
