Cards Pull Out 5-4 Victory at John Carroll

Match Results

CLEVELAND, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's tennis team pulled out a hard-fought 5-4 win at John Carroll University Saturday in Cleveland.

The Cardinals have won three straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matches since suffering a 5-4 loss at Capital University March 25. Otterbein, 7-9 overall, improved to 3-1 in the OAC and remains in the hunt in its quest to win back-to-back regular-season OAC titles.

"We knew this would be a very tough match and it certainly was," said Otterbein head coach Mark Anderson. "We got off to a great start by winning two of the doubles matches. We then had to win three, three-set matches at second, third and fifth singles to seal the victory."

David Seckel and Kendall Coffman each went 2-0 on the day.

Seckel and partner Will Willson won first doubles, 8-4, and Coffman and Ben Keen captured third doubles, 8-6, to put Otterbein up 2-1 heading into singles play.

It didn't get any easier from there. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets.

Seckel, at first singles, and Zach McDivitt, fifth singles, recovered to win after each lost in the first set. Seckel won, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while McDivitt won his match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Coffman won third singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The team is scheduled to return to the courts Wednesday, hosting Cedarville University in a non-conference match.
