Baseball Tallies 15-5 Victory at Wittenberg

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Cardinal baseball team jumped back into the win column Wednesday evening, running away with a 15-5 non-conference win at Wittenberg University.

Otterbein, now 23-11 overall on the year, will finish its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Mount Union. The Cards will need to win both games, and receive some additional help, in order to make the four-team postseason tournament.

Both teams scored once in the first inning before Otterbein pulled ahead for good, getting RBI from Tyler Kent and Ty Compton in the second inning en route to a 4-1 advantage.

The score remained the same until the sixth frame, when Sean Kettering walked with the bases loaded and Peyton Ross delivered a 2-RBI single through the right side, bumping the margin to 7-1. Otterbein blew the game wide open in its next at-bat, posting six runs in the seventh inning and never looking back. Highlighting the stretch was a grand slam off the bat of sophomore Brock Frentzel.

Wittenberg (9-22) attempted to climb back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the lead would be too much as Otterbein coasted to victory.

Right-hander Ben Hamilton improved to 3-0 this season on the bump, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings after quickly coming into the game as a reliever. He scattered just three hits in the process and now holds a 1.45 E.R.A this spring.

Compton finished the day 3 for 4 at the plate as he contends for the OAC batting title, running his season average to a healthy .415 this year. Ross and Kent each tallied multi-hit games as well, with Ross driving in three runs and Kent scoring three times himself.
