Cards Back in the OAC Championship Match Again

Match Results

MASON, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's tennis team will be going for back-to-back Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tournament championships following a hard-fought 5-4 decision over rival Capital University Friday in the OAC semifinals in Mason.

Senior Kendall Coffman put the Cardinals over the top, overcoming a first set loss in a tie-breaker, to win the next two by identical 6-2 scores at third singles to give Otterbein the final decisive point in the tournament hosted by Ohio Northern University at the Lindner Tennis Center.

The Cardinals, seeded second, will face top-seeded John Carroll University, 10 a.m., Saturday at Lindner for the conference tournament championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA championships. Otterbein defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 5-0, in the OAC championship match last season.

Capital looked poised to repeat what they did during the regular season—beat Otterbein 5-4—emerging from doubles play with a 2-1 lead in the semifinal match. Will Willson and David Seckel won first doubles, 8-5, for Otterbein's lone point heading into singles play.

The other two doubles matches were close, however, with Zach McDivitt and Perry Williams losing 9-8 in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, and Coffman and Ben Keen dropping an 8-6 decision on court three.

Otterbein won its other three points in straight sets on the singles courts: Willson winning No. 1, 7-5, 6-2; McDivitt winning No. 5, 6-4, 6-2; and Sam Lawless winning No. 6, 6-3, 6-2.
