Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Otterbein University baseball team ended its season with a pair of non-conference losses Monday afternoon, falling by scores of 15-6 and 9-6 at La Roche College.
The Cardinals, finishing the year at 23-15 overall, took an early lead behind an RBI-single from catcher Stephan Hernon before the Red Hawks kicked into gear, scoring three times in their first at-bat before a seven-run third inning. Otterbein scored once in the fourth and added another in the fifth, but the climb would be too steep.
Senior Ty Compton went 3 for 4 with two RBI in the opener while Jake Simmerman, J.C. Gibson and Jordan Ashbrook all had 2 for 4 games at the dish. Nick Muse and Jeff Peters each tossed three innings on the mound.
Otterbein held a 2-1 lead midway through the second inning of game two after consecutive La Roche fielding errors, but the Red Hawks used another big inning to jump ahead for good. They scored six runs in the bottom of the second, scoring via hits, an error and wild pitch.
Compton and sophomore Brock Frentzel helped Otterbein score in the middle inning with RBI-doubles, but it wouldn't be quite enough as the hosts earned a sweep. Senior Nich Pitzer turned in a multi-hit game in the last outing of his collegiate career, joining Compton and Frentzel with two hits each.
Right-hander Terrell Dorsey tossed three solid innings to culminate the day, allowing just one run and two hits over the final three frames.
Despite the losses, Compton finishes his senior season with a stellar .432 average at the plate, good enough to win the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference batting title. It marks the first time an Otterbein player has led the league in batting since Tim Koethe hit .457 all the way back in 1987.
Compton, Pitzer and fellow classmates Taylor Ellis, Sean Kettering, Chase Thompson and Jordan Ashbrook exit after contributing 94 wins to the program since arriving to Westerville. Kettering ends his time ranked among the top-10 in school history for nine different offensive categories.
Otterbein head coach George Powell will look to achieve another milestone at the beginning of next season, finishing this spring campaign with 397 career victories over his 16 years at the helm.
