Cardinals Conclude Opening Week of Fall Season

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Otterbein University men's tennis team opened its initial week of the fall season this past Monday, hosting a dual home match against Wittenberg before traveling to Kenyon College this past weekend for an invitational.

The Cardinals dropped their initial match of the fall, 7-2, against Wittenberg, competing in six singles competitions and a trio of doubles matches. Otterbein picked up a win in each competition.

Perry Williams picked up the lone singles victory for the Cardinals, defeating Dennis Gleason (7-6, 8-6) in the No. 4 spot. 

Ben Keen battled for the Cards in the No. 5 spot, falling 6-3 to Tim McNulty before rallying to a 7-6 victory to force a third set in which Keen was defeated 7-4. Zach McDivitt also played a tough slate in the No. 3 spot, falling 7-5 in both sets.

Rounding out the Cardinals in singles was No. 1 Will Willson, who was defeated by Martin Mora (6-3, 6-2); David Seckel fell to Matt Arroyo in the No. 2 spot (6-4, 6-2); No. 6 Tyler Wharton dropped both sets to Caleb Astwood (6-3, 6-3).   

Otterbein's victory in doubles belonged to Seckel and Willson, who teamed up in the No. 1 spot to defeat Mora and Luke Minard (8-4). 

McDivitt and Williams were paired as the Cardinals No. 2 tandem, falling to Arroyo and Gleason (9-7); Keen and Wharton also dropped their doubles match in the No. 3 spot, coming up short to McNulty and Akbar Tiwana (8-6). 

At the Kenyon Invitational, the Cards competed against Allegheny College, Ohio Wesleyan University and Kenyon in five separate singles flights and three doubles flights, reaching the semifinals in one of each of the competitions.

Willson advanced to the semifinals of Flight A, defeating Felipe Duarte of Ohio Wesleyan (7-6, 6-1) in round one, before falling to Nick Fiaschetti of Kenyon (6-0, 6-1). 

Williams notched a consolation victory over Allegheny's Samarth Gopal (9-8) in Flight C, before dropping a fifth place matchup to Allegheny's Zach Anderson (8-0). 

A pair of Cardinal players faced off in the consolation match of Flight D, as Keen defeated Yannik Leusch (8-4). Keen then picked up a fifth place victory over Colton Johnson-Taylor (8-6) of Allegheny.

Leusch paired with Derek Krieger in doubles competitions to pick up a 9-7 win over Allegheny's Will Andres and Kevin Adell. 

The Cardinals will continue their fall season on Sept. 22 with a dual match at Cedarville, before wrapping up the season on Sept. 25 - 28 at the ITA Central Regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis.
