Cardinals Drop 74-64 Contest at Wilmington

Box Score
WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein men's basketball team endured a disappointing road loss Wednesday evening in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, finishing on the low end of a 74-64 matchup at Wilmington College.

Both teams struggled a bit offensively throughout a low-scoring first half, with the game tied 10-10 after six minutes of action before the Quakers opened a marginal 18-12 lead.

The Cardinals (3-13, 1-8 OAC) later trailed 20-18 after a pair of free-throws from freshman Ryan Karapas, but Wilmington managed to finish the half on an 11-5 spurt to take a 31-23 cushion entering intermission. Junior Grant Fenner led all players with eight points at the break.

Fenner helped the Cards remain close in the early stages of the second half, scoring seven of the team's initial 10 points as Otterbein trailed 36-33 at the 14:24 mark.

Wilmington (3-11, 2-7 OAC) began to find some breathing room a few possessions later, extending a four-point lead to a 49-35 advantage with a timely 10-0 run. The Cards withstood the run and began their climb back, embarking on a 20-8 run to eventually close within 57-55 after a three-pointer from Jake Phillis with 4:43 left to play.

The contest remained a one-possession battle a minute later after Marc McCuen sank a trifecta with 3:39 on the game clock, but Wilmington answered with an 11-2 run down the home stretch to ultimately emerge victorious.

Fenner tied for a game-high 18 points despite the loss, shooting 6 of 16 from the field and also leading all players with nine rebounds. McCuen added 15 on a 5-of-11 effort from the floor while Bryan Mackenzie posted 11.

Phillis, the OAC's third-leading scorer entering the week, was held to a season-low seven points on a 2-of-9 shooting clip. Otterbein shot just 32.7 percent as a team compared to 47.1 for the Quakers.

Wilmington's Brandon Smith matched Fenner with 18 to pace four players in double figures on the host side. The Cards tallied an 18-5 edge in second-chance scoring but Wilmington had a 33-11 advantage in bench scoring.

Otterbein finishes out the week at home, beginning the second portion of the OAC round-robin schedule with a rematch against Mount Union Saturday at 3 p.m. The Purple Raiders (11-5, 7-2 OAC) held off the Cardinals, 92-82, earlier this season in Alliance but have most recently dropped consecutive games to nationally-ranked John Carroll and Marietta.
