Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team let one slip away Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action, relinquishing an early 6-1 lead and ultimately falling 10-9 at nearby Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Cardinals (9-3) sprinted ahead from the start, getting first-inning home runs from leftfielder
Sam Severance first baseman Jake Simmeran to capture a 3-0 lead. Otterbein tacked on a fourth run in the opening at-bat thanks to an RBI-double from shortstop
Ben Beachy, giving him a hit in his 12th-straight game so far this year.
Ohio Wesleyan (5-2) got on the board with a solo homer in its first plate appearance, but the Cards tacked on two more in the sixth and led by five runs, the largest gap of the game.
The Bishops used a big fourth inning to erase the deficit, scoring five times in the frame to draw even at 6-6 heading to the middle of the contest. Otterbein scooted back ahead twice over the next few innings, regaining the lead at 7-6 and then 9-7 in the top of the seventh capped by an RBI-double from catcher
Stephan Hernon, who was filling in again behind the plate for
Mark Walton.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 9-8 in the bottom of the inning and then came up with the difference-making sequence in the bottom of the eighth, getting a solo homer to begin the inning before a Cardinal error ultimately allowed an unearned run to come in and put OWU ahead for good.
Hernon drew a two-out walk in the ninth to get the tying run aboard, but the inning would stall and the Bishops would prevail.
Five Otterbein players tallied two hits on the day while the offense also drew four walks. Ohio Wesleyan was paced by three-hit performances from Aaron Caputo and Colin Stolly, while eight-hole hitter Tyler Falherty delivered a game-high three RBI.
Sophomore
Stevie Yuran (0-2) took the loss on the bump for the Cards while reliever Ryan Moss snagged the win for the home team.
Otterbein finishes out the week at Fishbaugh Field, returning to host a home-opening doubleheader with Marian University (Wisc.) beginning Saturday a 1 p.m. The two squads are also scheduled to play a rubber match on Sunday depending on the weather.
