Otterbein (13-3 overall) benefited from a solid outing by the Cardinal pitching staff, led by starter
Jordon Mally who improved to 3-0 on the year after going six strong innings and allowing no runs, on five hits, while walking just one batter and striking out two.Â
The game was scoreless through five and a half innings of play, as both teams combined for just seven hits, until senior
Tyler Kent blasted a two-run home run over the left-field fence and into the Otterbein tennis courts. The homer scored freshman
Ben Beachy from first after he tallied a single in the previous at-bat to extend his hit streak to 16 games.
Senior
Jeff Peters relieved Mally to begin the seventh inning, loading the bases on two hits and an error, before recording an impressive strikeout for the initial out of the inning. Fellow senior
KC Brown then came in for Peters and induced a flyout and a strikeout to end the threat by the Bulldogs.Â
Senior catcher
Mark Walton, seeing his first action since sustaining a slight injury on the Florida trip, led off the bottom half of the second inning with a sharp double to right-center field. Junior
Brock Frentzel then reached on an error by the Adrian third baseman, which scored Walton for the third run of the day.
Brown tossed a flawless eighth inning, sending the Bulldogs down in order, while a triple by Kent in the bottom half of the frame set the table for senior
Jake Simmerman to move Kent across the plate.
Junior
Caleb Norton took the ball in the final inning and forced a double play to end the game, concluding a day in which the Cardinal pitchers combined to allow just six hits and two walks while also recording five strikeouts.
The Cardinals open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on Friday at home in a doubleheader against Ohio Northern. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
