Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team rebounding from a disappointing weekend to shut down Wittenberg University on Tuesday afternoon, holding the Tiger to just one hit and securing an 8-1 win at Fishbaugh Field.
Wittenberg's Dalton Boucher singled to left-center in the second inning, but five Cardinal pitchers and a clean defensive performance kept the Tigers at bay for the remainder of the matchup.
Otterbein (14-5) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a 2-RBI single from senior
Tyler Kent, and followed with scores in the fourth, fifth and six innings to put the game out of reach. Included in the stretch was a solo homer from senior
Mark Walton, who started his first-career game at third base before moving back to catcher in the ninth.
Senior
Jordon Mally was impressive yet again and improved to 4-0 on the mound, walking none over five scoreless innings before giving way his classmates in the bullpen. Seniors
Adam Collier,
Nick Muse,
Justin Roberts and
KC Brown all tossed one inning to help complete the one-hit performance, with Wittenberg's only run coming on a stolen base-throwing error play in the sixth.
The top of the lineup led the way for Otterbein as
Taylor Hutchison, Walton and Kent all had two hits on the day. Kent reached base five of six times while
Jake Simmerman and
J.C. Gibson both drew three walks.
The Cardinals will finish the week with an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on the road, traveling to play Baldwin Wallace University for a 1 p.m. start Saturday in Berea. Otterbein head coach
George Powell, currently at 399 wins, will look to become the eighth coach in league history to reach 400.
