BEXLEY, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team tallied an important Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) sweep Thursday afternoon, winning a pair of games at cross-town Capital University in what was a rescheduled date from last weekend.
The Cardinals, winning by scores of 10-5 and 6-4, improve themselves to 19-6 on the season and 5-3 within the bunched-up OAC standings. Otterbein will host a twinbill with John Carroll University on Saturday, at 1 p.m., to finish out a hectic week.
Capital (14-8, 3-3 OAC) jumped ahead early in both games, the first instance being a 4-0 lead after two innings in the opening affair. Otterbein didn't waste much time countering, using a 2-RBI double from
Tyler Kent followed by an RBI-double from
Jake Simmerman to post three runs in the top of the third.
Otterbein tied the game on an RBI-double from
Taylor Hutchison in the fourth, and then took a 6-4 advantage by way of a 2-RBI triple from Simmerman in the next inning.
The Cards didn't look back from there, adding a few insurance runs late and getting a complete-game victory from senior
Jordon Mally, who improved to 5-0 in the bump this spring. He scattered 10 hits on the day, but struck out seven batters and did a nice job working out of situations to leave 11 Capital runners on base.
Simmerman and designated hitter
Pat Birrer both tallied three RBI while Kent and senior third baseman
Mark Walton each drove in two runs.
The Crusaders once again took an early lead with three runs in their first-bat of game two, but Otterbein kept with a similar theme and brought home five runs in the ensuing inning.
Brock Frentzel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a 2-RBI double from
Ben Beachy, a run after a Capital fielding error and another run on a double-play groundout.
Frentzel pushed the advantage to 6-3 in the next inning with an RBI-double down the left-field line to score
J.C. Gibson, and no scoring would take place throughout the next five innings as Otterbein kept the Crusader offense in check.
Left-hander
Stevie Yuran went 5.1 innings for his first win of the year and was relieved by senior
Adam Collier, who allowed just two hits and one run over the final 3.2 innings to earn a save. The Cardinal pitching staff has now gotten at least one save from six different pitchers this season.
Beachy and Walton both hit 2 for 4 in the game while Kent drew a pair of walks. Kent scored three runs in the first game of the day and now needs just two more to become Otterbein's all-time leader in the category.
Second baseman Brett Colburn paced the Capital offense in game two, hitting 3 for 5 out of the second spot in the lineup. He finished the day a combined 4 for 9.
