Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team wrapped up its non-conference schedule in solid fashion Saturday afternoon, walking away from Washington and Jefferson College with a 14-8 victory.
The Cardinals, advancing to 6-4 on the year, will open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play next weekend at Muskingum University. Otterbein beat the Muskies 11-1 last year in a weather-shortened game.
A goal from senior
Connor Baak put the Cards ahead less than 90 seconds in, but the Generals hung tough and the game was later deadlocked, at 3-3, after a score from Kyle Heinig at the 5:08 mark.
Otterbein began to slowly pull away from there, going on a 4-0 run over the next eight minutes to open 7-3 advantage as the second quarter progressed. The Tan and Cardinal eventually took a 10-5 cushion into halftime behind three goals from sophomore
Connor Dziewit.
Otterbein put the game out of reach early in the second half, scoring four-straight times to begin the third quarter and never looking back. W&J netted three goals in the earlier portion of the final quarter, but the damage had been done as the Cards emerged victorious.
Dziewit finished with four goals while Baak tallied a game-high five points with three goals and two assists. Attackman
Nick Tholt scored once and set up three others to register four points, while
Marcus Willis added two goals of his own.
Senior faceoff specialist
Carlos Salazar turned in another strong outing in the middle, capturing 16 of 23 opportunities and picking up eight groundballs. Fifth-year senior
Derek Hohn snagged six ground-ball pickups of his own.
Goalies
James Gundling and
Matt Niemi held strong in the cage, combining to stop 17 shots and keep a third-consecutive opponent in single digits.
Heinig paced Washington and Jefferson with three goals of his own.
