RICHMOND, Ind. - The Otterbein University men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2016-17 campaign with a 5-4 loss at Indiana University-East on Friday afternoon at the Glen Miller Park Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals, who finished last season with a 13-8 overall record to earn the third-seed in the conference tournament, returned to action today with six returning players and a trio of newcomers. The match began outdoors but was eventually moved inside midway through singles play due to inclement weather.
Otterbein picked up its first win of the match in doubles play as sophomore duo
Tyler Wharton and
Derek Krieger defeated the Red Wolves' Alex Shelley and Colton Shipley in second doubles (8-6). The Cards dropped their other two doubles matches 8-4 and 8-5, respectively.
Sophomore
Perry Williams assumed the top spot for the Cards in first singles, starting the season at 1-0 with a three-set win over Keaton Akers (6-2, 4-6, 10-8). Wharton picked up the team's third win in third singles after taking down Shelley in straight sets (6-1, 7-5).
Freshman
Riley Yost fared well in his collegiate debut, rounding out the final win of the match for Otterbein with a straight-set victory in sixth singles over Mitch Boyer (6-2, 6-3).
