GAMBIER, Ohio – The Otterbein University volleyball team made it a perfect weekend at the Kenyon Invitational, sweeping all four matches and improving its season record to 9-4.
The Cardinals tallied a pair of three-set wins to open Friday's action, beginning with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-14 win over Albion College.
Otterbein was led by junior
Marie Thornton's .440 hitting percentage up front, with the middle hitter blasting 11 kills, and no errors, on 25 attempts.
Megan Volosin added nine kills of her own while
Olivia Harris tacked on another eight.
Setter
Andrea Miller had 28 assists and libero
Ashlyn Leon came up with 19 digs for a Cardinal group that delivered eight service aces throughout.
The Cards finished Friday evening with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 triumph over Franklin College (Ind.), getting 11 kills from both Thornton and Harris as the team hit .248 as a whole. Miller, who has averaged more than 30 helpers in her last eight matches, had another 33 to continuing enhancing the offense.
Otterbein made quick work of Earlham College to launch Saturday's play, downing the Quakers by counts of 25-9, 25-22, 25-16. The Cards also defeated Earlham two weeks ago during opening weekend.
A balanced Cardinal offense paced the effort, with Thornton delivering seven kills and classmate
Brett Bey adding six.
Otterbein's final match extended just a bit longer, with the Cardinals overcoming a first-set loss to ultimately turn back Olivet College (Mich.) by scores of 13-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-22. Thornton reached a new career-high with 15 kills in the victory, committing just three errors over 30 attempts to hit an even .400.
Bey rattled off eight kills and a .200 percentage while Miller finished with a season-best 39 assists. The Cardinals finished with two solo blocks and 14 block assists in the match, led by five from
Alana King-Mendenhall.
Otterbein will have just one match this coming week, hosting an exhibition with nearby Columbus State Community College on Tuesday before eventually opening Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Heidelberg University.
