Men's Basketball Suffers 87-58 Setback at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Cardinal men's basketball team suffered an 87-58 defeat at Wilmington on Wednesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup inside Raizk Arena.

Otterbein (7-9 overall) has dropped its third-straight game in conference play after winning its first two OAC contests of the New Year. The Cardinals will host cross-town rival Capital on Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside the Rike Center.

The Cardinals got behind early trailing 10-7 before the Quakers quickly increased their lead to double-digits with less than 10 minutes left in the opening half. Wilmington boosted its lead to as many as 24 points in the frame before settling on a 47-25 lead at halftime.

Otterbein shot just 9-of-25 in the half, while Wilmington posted an efficient offense shooting over 60 percent.

The Quakers began the second half on a 16-3 scoring run as the Cardinals converted just one field goal through the first 9:40 of action. Wilmington's largest lead of the game came at the 5:31 mark with a 79-38 margin at-hand.

A total of 16 players saw playing time for the Cardinals with six totaling seven or more points. Freshman Connor Robinson led Otterbein with a career-high 10 points off the bench, totaling a 2-of-2 mark from the field shooting 5-of-6 from the foul line in four minutes of play.

Junior Matt Hughes followed with nine points to pair with a four rebounds, while senior Bryan Mackenzie was held to just seven points, making it just the third time this season he has not reached double figures in scoring.

Sophomores Ryan Karapas and Andre Bradley, as well as freshman Austin Springer, each totaled eight points off the bench. Otterbein concluded the game shooting just 32 percent with 40 of its points coming off the bench.

Wilmington finished the night shooting an impressive 52.4 percent from the floor, connecting on 12 three-pointers, enjoying a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint.
