Men's Basketball Exits Season With Loss to Mount Union

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal men's basketball team wrapped up its 2016-17 campaign with a 73-57 loss to Mount Union Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup on Senior Day.

Otterbein finishes the season with a 7-18 overall record and 3-15 mark in league play, a year in which the Cardinals posted a five-game win streak including consecutive victories over Ohio Northern (60-50) and Mount Union (86-84 OT).

Mount Union conversely enters the OAC Tournament as the four-seed finishing 9-9 in conference play and 14-11 overall with three wins in its last five games of the regular season.

The Purple Raiders came into the game down their second-leading scorer, guard JJ Kukura (17.7ppg), but managed to jump out to a 10-4 advantage just over four minutes into play.

Mount Union quickly extended its lead to seven points at the 10:19 mark, as guard Tommy Stenger accounted for eight of the team's first 15 points after knocking down a pair of three-pointers.

Otterbein was then ignited offensively by guard Austin Springer, who converted five free throws in a span of just over a minute of action, while a jumper from guard Cameron Arminio and a three-pointer by guard Nick Nossaman helped cut the Cards' deficit to three points.

Arminio notched a pair of free throws four minutes later to bring the Cards within one possession before forward Matt Hughes moved the margin within one point on a layup.

The Cardinals tied the game at 23 points apiece on a made free throw by Springer with 4:13 remaining, recording two more ties in the final three minutes, before the Raiders settled on a 33-27 lead at the break.

Mount Union quickly boosted its lead to eight points less than three minutes into the second frame before taking its first double-digit lead of the game at 43-33 at the 14:44 mark.

The Purple Raiders manufactured an 11-4 scoring run from that point, going ahead by 17 points in a five-minute span, before taking its largest lead of the afternoon at 72-53 with just over a minute left to play.

Otterbein was led by Springer, who finished tied for a game-high 17 points on 4-of-7 shooting with an 8-of-9 mark from the foul line. Arminio and forward Bryan Mackenzie totaled eight points apiece.

Mount Union was led by Stenger, who tied for a game-high 17 points on an efficient 7-of-13 shooting to go along with five rebounds and a game-best three assists.

Mackenzie, as well as fellow seniors Grant Fenner and Spencer Kendall, were honored pregame for their efforts as four-year members of the Otterbein basketball squad.
