ALBION, Mich. – The Cardinal men's tennis squad opened spring play Saturday with a 5-4 loss at Albion before rebounding with a 9-0 win over Olivet.

Otterbein moves to 1-2 overall with a matchup at Ohio Wesleyan on tap for next Wednesday in its final match before embarking on its annual spring trip to Orlando, Fla. First serve at OWU is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Cardinals fell behind 2-1 to Albion following doubles play after the Britons secured wins in first and third doubles. Sophomores Derek Krieger and Tyler Wharton teamed up for the Cards' first win of the day with an 8-1 victory in second doubles over Israel Trevino and Toma Shngoo.

Freshman Logan Sullivan and sophomore Juan Vera dropped a tough matchup against Robert Joerg and Josh McGarry by a count of 8-4, while senior Ben Keen and senior Perry Williams suffered an 8-6 defeat to Nick Kinachtchouk and Zach McKenzie in the top spot.

Albion took a commanding 4-1 lead after claiming victory in second and first singles, before Otterbein narrowed its deficit to 4-3 following wins by Wharton and Krieger in third and fourth singles, respectively.

Freshman Riley Yost then tied the match at four points apiece following a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Shngoo in sixth-singles, leaving fifth-singles as the decisive match.

Vera won the first set in fifth-singles over Kinachtchouk, 6-4, before dropping set two, 6-3, resulting in a third-set tiebreak. Kinachtchouk claimed that set, 10-7, to help the Britons capture the contest.

The Cardinals wrapped up their day up north by sweeping all nine points against Olivet in a neutral match played at Albion, beginning with a pair of victories in doubles play with a win by default in third doubles.

Keen and Williams paired in first-doubles for an 8-5 victory over Zachary Croze and Aaron Green while Krieger and Wharton teamed up in second-doubles for an 8-0 win over Ben Morris and Tyler Nobel.

Otterbein then recorded five wins in singles play along with a win by default in sixth-singles, with Williams starting it off with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Croze in the top spot.

Keen followed with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Green in second-singles, before Wharton, Krieger and Vera each recorded 6-1, 6-0 wins in their respective matches.
