WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Cardinal men's tennis squad recorded its second-straight win with a 6-3 defeat of Grove City (Pa.) on Monday afternoon in its first match outdoors this spring since returning home from break.
Otterbein (4-6 overall) has now recorded victories in three of its last five matches and has two non-conference contests remaining before embarking on the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) portion of its schedule next weekend. The Cards travel to Franciscan on Friday for a 5 p.m. start in Steubenville, Ohio.
The Cardinals were first on the scoreboard for the second-consecutive day after sophomores
Tyler Wharton and
Derek Krieger cruised to an 8-1 win over Nathan Roberts and Edward Doyle in second-doubles.
Grove City then tied the match at one apiece with an 8-4 victory in first-doubles, before sophomore
Juan Vera and
Logan Sullivan put the Cards ahead for good with a gritty 9-7 defeat of Jason Wichert and Andrew Iseminger, saving a pair of match points en route to victory.
Senior
Perry Williams rebounded after a loss in first-doubles with the initial Cardinal point in singles play, taking down Doyle 6-2, 6-2. Wharton, who received OAC Player of the Week honors on Monday afternoon, followed with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Miguel Esteban-Diaz in third-singles.
Otterbein then extended its lead to 5-1 as senior
Ben Keen recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win in second-singles, while Krieger was credited for the final win of the day for the Cards with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Jon Fleet.
