ORLANDO, Fla. – The Cardinal men's tennis team dropped its final two matches of its spring trip to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus.
Otterbein wraps up its start to spring play with a 2-6 overall record with one win in its last three matches. The Cards travel to Wittenberg for their next match on March 17 at 4:30 p.m.
Match Three vs. Hanover (Lost, 7-2)
The Cardinals recorded a win in third-doubles behind a victory from sophomore
Juan Vera and freshman
Logan Sullivan over the Panthers' Mitchell Minniear and Jonathan Helmers (9-7).
Otterbein also saw battles in the first and second-doubles, with seniors
Ben Keen and
Perry Williams falling in a 7-4 tiebreak-set to Drake Clohessy and Dakota Smith.
The only other win for the Cardinals came in sixth-singles as freshman
Riley Yost defeated Seth Wallace (6-3, 6-4), as Yost improved to 6-3 overall in singles play.
Sophomore
Derek Krieger forced a third-set tiebreak in fourth-singles against Alex Bates, before ultimately falling 10-5 in the tiebreak.
Math Four vs. Wartburg (Lost, 6-3)
Otterbein took an early 2-0 advantage after taking consecutive 8-3 victories second and third-doubles, beginning with a win in the second spot from Krieger and classmate
Tyler Wharton.
Vera and Sullivan then tallied their second-straight win as a tandem, defeating the Knights' Sam Nettleton and Colin Jacobs (8-3).
Wartburg then took control of the match, claiming five-of-six singles matches despite multiple hard-fought affairs across the board for the Cardinals.
The Cards battled within three points of the Knights in six different sets throughout the six matches in singles competition, including a back-and-forth 14-12 loss by Vera in fifth-singles.
Yost was again a bright spot for the Cards in sixth-singles with a win over Elliot Kuchera (6-3, 6-2).
