DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team finished a split during a pair of mid-week games against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) school Thursday afternoon, overcoming a loss against Denison to beat Ohio Wesleyan, 11-6.
The Cardinals opened final-exam week Wednesday afternoon at home, falling by a score of 9-1 against a well-rounded Denison group. The Big Red improved to 24-8 on the season in the process.
Otterbein only trailed 3-1 after right fielder
Pat Birrer launched a solo home run in the third inning, but it was all Denison from that point on as the visitors posted another three runs in the fourth and never looked back.
The Cards weren't able to get much going at the plate, mustering just five hits on the day and leaving seven on base.
The offensive script would be entirely different come Thursday as play resumed in a halted game at Ohio Wesleyan, which had been suspended last week due to rain/lightning with Otterbein leading 3-2 in the sixth inning.
Otterbein busted the game open in its first plate appearance, getting three-straight home runs in the top of the seventh and ultimately opening a 10-2 advantage.
Connor Brett rocketed a three-run bomb before
Brock Frentzel and
Dom Guzzi both delivered solo shots.
The lead would be more than enough for a determined Otterbein group, which improved to 24-10 on the season and had multi-hit games from five players when it was all said and done. Shortstop
Ben Beachy led the way with a 3 for 5 effort in the leadoff spot, smacking a pair of doubles and a home run over the two days of action.
Otterbein is scheduled to be back in action this weekend with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader against Heidelberg University, although inclement weather may have other ideas. Stay tuned to otterbeincardinals.com or twitter.com/otterbeinsports for updates.
