WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal men's tennis team powered past Transylvania 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup inside the Clements Rec Center.
Otterbein (6-4 overall) will begin Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play tomorrow at Mount Union, a match which was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to cold weather conditions. First serve in Alliance, Ohio, is set for 3:30 p.m.
The Cardinals snapped their three-match losing streak after opening the match with a pair of wins in doubles competition, starting with freshmen
Connor Radune and
Jared Deel defeating the Pioneers' Luke Groene and Eric Sandknop 8-6 in first doubles.
After a narrow two-point loss in the second spot for juniors
Juan Vera and
Tyler Wharton, Otterbein jumped back in front of Transylvania thanks to an 8-4 victory in third doubles from junior
Daniel Bishoff and sophomore
Logan Sullivan.
Otterbein cruised to victory from that point forward, sweeping all six matches in singles play with a pair of shutouts credited to Wharton and Deel in the second and sixth spots, respectively.
Freshman
Jamie Price also dominated in third singles, taking down Brandon Stofleth (6-1, 6-0). The Cardinals wrapped up the match with three additional points from Radune in the top spot, Vera in the fourth spot and Yost in fifth singles.
The Cards now have five players with at least five wins in singles, with Vera and Yost leading the way at eight apiece, while Deel and Radune currently pace the team in doubles victories with five, four of which have come in the top spot.
