WHEATON, Ill. – The Cardinal wrestling team took the mat over the weekend at the highly-attended Pete Wilson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College, ultimately finishing 10th of 38 schools collectively and watching standout heavyweight
Drew Kasper remain unbeaten.
Kasper, entering ranked No. 10 nationally at 285 pounds, backed up his top seed by winning five-straight matches and improving to 24-0 on the season. He received a bye before a pair of decisions moved him into the quarterfinals on Saturday, where he ultimately posted three-straight major decisions to take the crown. He beat a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in the semifinal and championship bouts, working past No. 20 Justin Hennessy of Nebraska Wesleyan, 12-3, before an 11-2 major over No. 22 Lucius Rinehart of UW-Plateville in the final.
Multiple other Cardinals hit the podium to collect team points, including an admirable run by 157-pound freshman
Joey Bradberry after he lost a narrow 4-3 decision to begin on Friday. He rebounded with six-straight wins in the consolation bracket, five of those being bonus-point wins, before ultimately grabbing sixth place overall.
Corbin Bunsold held his own at 197 pounds with three-straight bonus-point victories to begin Friday's action, ultimately concluding the weekend at 5-2 overall and a seventh-place podium finish. His two losses came to No. 5 ranked Beau Yineman of UW-Oshkosh and No. 9-ranked Tyler Hammack of Heidelberg.
Jackson Lakso (133 lbs) maneuvered his bracket with a pair of early wins on Friday before heading to the consolation ladder, where he gathered another victory before eventually settling for an eighth-place finish. Classmate
Santino DiSabato also won twice on Friday at 141 pounds before bowing out following a pair of competitive four-point decisions.
Denver Aydelott (165) and
Donny Didion (174) also competed for the Cardinals in their respective weight classes.
Otterbein also received a special honor at the conclusion of the tournament, as redshirt sophomore
Joey Tromba was selected as the Pete George Sportsmanship Award Winner as voted on by the 16 officials. Tromba, Otterbein's 165-pound starter to begin this season, was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at the Cleveland Clinic.
The Cardinals will have a pair of outings at Alma and Mount St. Joseph in the coming weeks before heading to the NCAA Regional at Wabash come February 22-23.
