SUNBURY, Ohio - The Otterbein men's golf team finished first overall at the Cardinal Classic, as the Cardinals were the only team to shoot under 600 for the weekend.
Otterbein finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Capital by shooting a 599 for the event, as Mareitta and Ohio Northern tied for third as each team shot a 619. The Cardinals also brought their B squad who finished five strokes back of the Pioneers and Polar Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Consistency was the name of the game, as the Cardinals first five all finished within five strokes of each other. Johnny Peck led the way by shooting a 72 and a 78 to finish tied for third overall. One stroke back of Peck, was the duo of Tyler Dunfee and Spencer Jordan, as Dunfee had a low-round of 71.
- Sam Marty and Spencer Gifford rounded out the first five for Otterbein, as Marty shot 154 and finished 11th overall. Gifford bounced back on day two by improving by nine strokes and had the second best round out of the 34 man field.
- Kurt Fortman led the Otterbein B squad, as he shot two rounds of 76 good for a 152. Coury Rogers tied the lefty with a 152, as the freshman had a tournament low of a 71 on day two of the event.
- Logan Reed had back-to-back rounds of an 80 to finish T-17th, while Lucas Fox ended the Classic with a 162. Rounding out the second team was Ryan Karapas who scored a 173.
- Josh Jankausas, Zach Thomson and Trevor Deere all competed as individuals, as Jankausas had the best score, 162, by an individual.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Every single member of the golf program participated in the Cardinal Classic.
- This is the second time in the past three seasons that the Classic has occurred, as Otterbein has won the event both times.
- All the members of the first team shot within five strokes of each other, as Peck, Dunfee and Jordan all placed inside the top five.
- On each day of the event, four of five players on the A squad shot under an 80. Fortman and Rogers led the second squad by both finishing inside the top 10, as Otterbein had seven of the top 12 scores.

The Cardinals will be participating in the Wooster Invitational next weekend, as the event will be held at the Wooster Country Club.
