Box Score WOOSTER, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team saw another memorable season come to a close Saturday morning in the NCAA Mideast Regional, dropping a 13-3 elimination game against host, top seed and No. 20-ranked College of Wooster at Art Murray Field.
The Fighting Scots, ranked preseason No. 1 in the nation, took a quick lead as the visiting team on its own field with two runs in the first at-bat. Otterbein got first-inning singles from
Ben Beachy and
Luke Barber, putting two runners on with just one out before both were eventually stranded.
Wooster used a pair of bunt singles to manufacture a third run in the next frame, and then took advantage of new life with two outs after what appeared to be a slow groundout to Barber at first base. The ball trickled foul at the last moment and was ruled dead, ultimately allowing the Scots to rip two RBI-singles and opening a 5-0 cushion.
A hard lineout from
Sam Edgell left the bases loaded in the second, and Wooster strung together another two-out rally for more runs in the third. Otterbein attempted to erase the touchdown deficit against Wooster left-hander Evan Faxon, but the sophomore kept a clean sheet through four innings before letting his bullpen take the ball.
The Cards left two stranded (in scoring position) to end the fifth, and Wooster plated four more in the sixth to blow the game open. Otterbein's scoring output came via two late swings, a two-run homer from
Matthew Gibson in the eighth and then a monster solo blast from Barber with two outs in the ninth.
Otterbein left ten stranded overall throughout the morning and was 3 for 15 with runners on. Barber was 3 for 5 at the dish while second baseman
Dmitri Collaros hit 2 for 4.
The Cardinals made their third-straight NCAA appearance this spring after more Ohio Athletic Conference hardware, winning the OAC Tournament to claim their fourth OAC trophy in as many years.
