TIFFIN, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling team walked away from the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Quad Duals with a 1-2 record on Saturday, dropping matchups with Baldwin Wallace and Heidelberg before responding with a triumph over Muskingum to close the day.
The Cardinals, now 14-5 on the season and 3-3 against the league, opened with a tough showdown against No. 8-ranked Baldwin Wallace. BW opened a 24-0 lead early and eventually coasted to a 37-10 victory in the morning session.
Otterbein got on the scoreboard in the 157-pound bout, when nationally-ranked freshman
Ryan Whitten secured his 30th victory of the season with a 6-3 decision over No. 10-ranked Dalton Leightner. Fellow nationally-ranked teammates
Corbin Bunsold (184) and
Drew Kasper (heavyweight) closed the dual with wins themselves.
Bunsold, ranked No. 21 in the latest D3Wrestle.com poll, scored early and often en route to a 19-10 major. Kasper, remaining the nation's top-ranked heavyweight, returned to action after a week off to deliver a 10-3 decision.
Otterbein then came up just short in what many expected to be a tight dual with Heidelberg, and the final score reflected just that as the host Student Princes emerged 26-20. The Cardinals had early wins from
Jackson Lakso (133) and Whitten, but Heidelberg stood on top at 20-6 entering the heavier classes.
Joey Bradberry (174) had a critical 48-second pin that kept Otterbein within striking distance, but Bunsold met his toughest match of the season against No. 3-ranked and reigning All-American Dylan Roth. The reigning OAC Wrestler of the Year, who went 40-2 last winter, secured a fall at the 2:14 mark.
Luke Hess, continuing to wrestle in place of starter
Jarrod Setliff, countered with a nice decision at 197 before Kasper tallied a 15-0 tech-fall shutout.
Otterbein culminated the day with a lopsided 49-4 victory against Muskingum, taking advantage of three forfeits and five other bonus-point victories. Whitten, Plaisir, Bradberry and Kasper all delivered first-period pins, with Plaisir and Kasper's both coming in under 30 seconds.
Otterbein will have the middle of this coming week off to regroup before heading to Illinois to the annual Wheaton Invitational.
