DAY 1 RESULTS
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Otterbein men's track and field squad got itself off to a solid start on day one of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Track and Field Championship, currently sitting in second place at the meet hosted by Marietta College.
The Cardinals, holding 60 points, trail only Mount Union and its 79 points heading into the second day. Only seven of 19 total events have been officially scored at this point.
Otterbein's day started off with a bang, as rising sophomore
Tyler Boales flew to a victory in the long jump with a leap of 23-8 and change (7.23 meters). His effort not only breaks a six-year old school record set by Brandon Bruner in 2014, but also puts him inside the top-10 nationally at the moment.
Another OAC title came by way of senior
Chase Hampton in the 5K, easing to a time of 15:02 and crossing almost simultaneously with teammate
Hunter Moore. The duo finished six seconds ahead of the field, which saw
Alex Clevinger take fifth to rack up more points for the team.
The distance medley relay squad of
Cal Yackin,
Nathan Forney,
Gage Beireis and
Jacob Thompson took runner-up honors in 10:28, running faster than last year's DMR but coming in behind winner John Carroll. Forney also took fourth place in the 500 meters prior to that, missing the podium by just 0.1 seconds, while
Tanner Sipes took fifth to secure additional points.
In the field, Michael Kanton hit the podium in the weight throw after a chuck of 15.88 meters. That toss gave him a new PR and remained third on the program's top-10 list.
In prelim action, Boales and
Cwinn Febus advanced out of the 60-meter dash while Febus and
Mike Rennette moved on in the 60 hurdles.
