FINAL RESULTS
ADA, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling team continued growing Saturday at the 40th-annual Ohio Northern Invitational, taking fourth of 16 schools inside the ONU Sports Center.
The Cardinals (122 points) received notable contributions from a variety of participants, ultimately eclipsing the University of Dubuque by less than two points and finishing in the top quarter of the standings.
Top-seeded
Ryan Whitten led the collective charge at 157 pounds, going 4-1 on the day and settling for a runner-up finish after a tough decision to Zarik Anderson of Dubuque in the championship. He began the day with a pair of bonus-points victories and now stands 12-5 on the young season.
Joey Bradberry, also seeded atop his 184 division, worked to a third-place finish after also posting a 4-1 mark. He began with two falls before dropping an air-tight sudden-victory showdown (2-0) with Michael Jacobs of Adrian in the semifinals. Bradberry is now 13-3 this season.
Cale Callahan (now 12-6 overall) turned in a 5-2 record in the 165-pound bracket, taking fourth place after ending on the low side in a pair of decisions with former Cardinal Zach Altman (now at Adrian). Altman emerged 4-2 in both nail-biters.
Sophomores
Nathan Leko (149) and
Kyle De Moss (174 lbs) both took fifth place in their weight classes on the day, each posting 5-2 records while seeing a variety of results/opponents.
Austin Amens and
Levi Kibler also performed well at 174 pounds. Amens went 3-2, getting eliminated by De Moss, while Kibler chalked up an even 2-2 day with some nice moments.
Senior
Jarrod Setliff was cooking at 197 pounds, securing three-straight pins (two in the initial period), before dropping a narrow 7-4 decision with Donald Moses of Adrian. Setliff then endured a disheartening injury just 70 seconds into his consolation match, despite being ahead on the scoreboard, and retired for the day.
Joey Buckland (141 lbs) ended the day strong, catching fire in the wrestleback to finishin 4-3 on the day and garner eighth place.
Otterbein got nice contributions and development in the heavyweight division.
Billy Reed-Bodey went 3-2 on the day, finding momentum in a consolation bracket that featured three hard-fought decision. Freshman
Abel Garantche turned heads as things progressed, overcoming an early loss to rip three-straight falls in workmanlike fashion.
Otterbein will have two weeks off before culminating the 2021 calendar at the Kalahari Duals, hosting December 18 at Heidelberg.
