FINAL RESULTS
ADA, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling team delivered some really nice moments across Saturday action at the Ohio Northern Invitational, ultimately coming in fifth of 13 competing schools.
The Cards landed with 90.5 collective points, edging out Heidelberg for a top-five effort and settling just a half-point shy of Adrian in fourth.
Otterbein led by a
championship effort from senior Ryan Whitten at 165 pounds, overcoming a tight runner-up effort in this same event last year. He rattled off five-straight victories in a variety of ways this time around… and ultimately held off former Cardinal Zach Altman (now at Adrian) for a tight 1-0 decision in the championship bout.
OTHER NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS:
125 Pounds: Noah Houchins turned in a 3-2 mark on the day and eventually came in seventh. He had a pair of technical falls and a 53-second pin along his path.
133 Pounds: Zach Orseno also took seventh in his division, bouncing back from a close decision loss to earn one of his own in the wrestle-back section.
141 Pounds: Freshman
Andrew Sas found the most success en route to an eight-place finish. He overcame an early setback to rip off three-straight wins in the consolation bracket, including a pair of falls.
149 Pounds: More Cardinals took part here, with freshman
Carter Mottley racking up an early pin.
157 Pounds: Austin Amens (third) and
Jacob Williams (seventh) represented themselves well. Amens advanced into the semis before a loss but worked back with two major decisions. Williams battled back with two pins himself, followed by a 10-9 decision and then a loss. But he regrouped for a comfortable decision in the seventh-place bout.
165: See above!
174 Pounds:
Gary Steele,
Declan Jewitt and
Austin Rheyne took part for the Cardinals.
184 Pounds: Logan Cormell earned points for the team with a sixth-place performance, going 3-2 on the day that featured a nice fall and narrow 4-3 decision.
197 Pounds: Brandon Thomas posted a pin in 97 seconds during the morning session but was caught late in his wrestle-back match.
285 Pounds: Zac Stray secured an early decision before sustaining a pair of defeats.
UP NEXT:
Otterbein will have two weeks off before heading up to the annual Kalahari Duals, hosted once again by Heidelberg.
