Men's Tennis Splits to Conclude Action in Sunshine State

ORLANDO, Fla. – After a roller-coaster stretch in the Sunshine State, the Otterbein men's tennis team ultimately settled with a split to culminate the final day of competition Thursday evening at USTA National Campus.

The Cardinals, originally with five opponents on the schedule this last week, ended up only playing three of them due to inclement weather. Rain forced showdowns with Wheaton (Ill.) and Covenant to be canceled.

Nevertheless, Otterbein earned a 9-0 shutout against Monmouth sandwiched between competitive 6-3 losses to Ursinus and Hampden-Sydney.

URSINUS RECAP/RESULTS:
Otterbein fell behind 3-0 after doubles action on Tuesday and just couldn't quite catch up on the team scoreboard. Two of those three doubles courts settled 8-5.

The Cardinals flew back with some momentum atop the singles list as Jake McDivitt (1), Gabriel Atteh (2) and Tom Ohler (3) all won despite tough first sets. McDivitt won 7-5 before his opponent retired in the next frame…

Atteh, losing 2-6 in the initial set, countered to win by the same margin in the second and then emerged 10-8 in a breaker. Ohler won a 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) in his first set before a dominant shutout in the next. Dylan Shook came up shy at fourth doubles after two very tight sets.

MONMOUTH RECAP/RESULTS:
The Cards had roughly 48 hours off before getting back on the court, this time dominating the Fighting Scots on all courts. McDivitt faced the stiffest test on the other side, but prevailed 8-3 at doubles and then 6-3, 6-1 in singles.

All other Cardinals comfortably pulled away from their opposition. Boban Mihajlov and Nate Stevens won handily at the fifth and sixth individual spots, respectively.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY RECAP/RESULTS:
A match that was nearly canceled due to more inclement weather ended up taking place later Thursday evening on a clay surface. Otterbein held a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion before the Tigers rallied after the sun set.

Hampden-Sydney captured five singles matchups, with Atteh (6-2, 3-6, 10-3) snagging Otterbein's lone point in the section. Ohler battled admirably before settling on the low side of a narrow 7-5, 7-5 final tally.

UP NEXT:
The Cardinals will have a full week off, traveling back to Ohio and welcoming the Wittenberg Tigers to campus next Saturday at 11 a.m.
