Did I Hear a Niner? Cards Begin Outdoor Slate at UNC Charlotte

FINAL RESULTS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a few months of competing indoors, the Otterbein Track & Field program finally got themselves outside for competition officially launch spring.

The Cardinals traveled south over the weekend and visited the 49er Classic (hosted by UNC Charlotte), getting back inside the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center for the first time since 2019. Otterbein competed against mostly Division I schools and racked up some solid results to begin the outdoor campaign…

The men's distance crew was out in full force. Bill Daily took seventh of 64 runners in the 1,500 meters, covering the track in 3:52 for the third-fastest time in program history. He was also 10th of 56 later on in the 800 meters after breezing the two laps in 1:55.

Cal Yackin, fresh off competing in the mile at NCAA Indoor, finished a few steps behind Daily in both of those races. He went 3:56 in the 1,500 (good enough for 16th place) and then ran 1:56 in the 800 section.

John Nice was sixth of 55 competitors in the 5K, coming in at 14:52 to crack the program's top-10 list. Jason Mehalic (31:50) and Ryan Estes (32:13) both landed top-five efforts in the lengthy 10K under the Friday night lights.

Cwinn Febus, back for a sixth year of competition on blanket waivers from the pandemic, made his season debut after waiting/competing through indoor season unattached. He was eighth of 32 in the 110 hurdles and also laced up in the 200 meters.

In the field, Nick Agerter was runner-up in "Section B" of the pole vault after clearing 4.25 meters (13-11 ¼). The OAC indoor champ will look to keep progressing across the spring. Mike Rennette, back in uniform after working through an injury this winter, chucked the javelin a healthy 155-8 to miss his PR by just a few feet.

On the women's side, Gracie Dennison continued her busy stretch with no time off between the NCAA Indoor Championships and the outdoor schedule. Following a 13th-place finish nationally in the 60 hurdles, she got loose in the 100's (by running 14.68) to settle ninth of 31 entrants.

Ravyn Goodson, beginning her first outdoor season, threw the discus 114-2 and also got loose in the shot put.

Sprinter Lydia Baumgartner represented nicely in the 200 meters, working the curve/straightaway in 26.21 to just narrowly miss Otterbein's top-10 list by .005 seconds.
