WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Another showdown with Capital presented the opportunity to gain possession of another "rivalry" oar Sunday afternoon, and that's exactly what the Otterbein men's tennis team did in blanking the visiting Comets by a 9-0 tally.
The Cardinals, getting on the court after an unusual month-long layoff for a little breakfast ball, launched the action at 11 a.m. and worked to claim all three doubles courts. Also impressive during the opening rallies was both teams remaining alert for incoming balls from batting practice on the baseball diamond.
Nevertheless, a hailstorm of baseballs likely wouldn't have altered the outcome beyond left field as Otterbein opened a 3-0 lead behind tandem victories from
Jake McDivitt and
Tom Ohler (8-4),
Gabriel Atteh and
Jamie Price (8-1) and
Will Newberry alongside
Dylan Shook (8-5).
The momentum was carried nicely into singles action as the Cards took all six individual courts by straight sets. Price worked a little extra for a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the third spot and Newberry fought off a pesky opponent in his second frame (6-3) on the fifth line.
McDivitt (1), Atteh (2), Ohler (3) and
Boban Mihajlov (6) didn't drop any more than two sets in their showdowns.
Otterbein gets back to .500 on the season and begins league play on a high note. The Cards are back in action will three matches this coming week, taking on the like of Ohio Northern (Tuesday), Marietta (Wednesday) and then Baldwin Wallace come Good Friday.
