TIFFIN, Ohio – Some people like carnivals for the cotton candy, funnel cakes and merry-go-rounds. The Otterbein Track & Field programs almost certainly enjoy those things, but the squad took more of a workmanlike approach into The Paradiso Athletic Complex Friday evening.
The Cardinals, arriving at the Tiffin Track Carnival to launch Easter weekend, competed in the middle portion of a three-day event jointly hosted by Heidelberg and Tiffin. Roughly 30 schools are participating in the showcase.
TOP HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Cards actually ended the weekend with their most notable result, winning the "shuttle hurdles" with the quartet of Zane Scheiderer, Landon Burns, Cwinn Febus and Mike Rennette. Many suggest the group would have broken a minute had Burns left on time...
- But, getting back to Friday's action... Otterbein loaded up in the men's 10K, landing five runners in the top 11 and getting a victory from John Nice. He posted 30:30, winning the race by 37 seconds and now ranking fourth on the program's all-time list. Nathan Craft ran 31:31 to also crack the chart.
- Logan Price delivered a big PR in the discus, launching 127-11 (38.99 meters) on his third attempt.
- Gracie Dennison (14.54) and Megan Carey (15.37) landed in the top 10 of the straight hurdles, with Dennison taking runner-up behind Tiffin standout Amirah Strauther. She ranks 11th nationally at the moment in the event.
- Febus and Rennette were just as clean on the men's side, covering the 110H in 14.58 and 14.73 (respectively) to both land top four... and also rank top-12 nationally at the moment. Indiana Tech's Ahumad Willis edged Febus to win the event by .001 seconds.
- The Cards had three inside the top 10 of the men's 5K. Bill Daily (14:44) and Cal Yackin (14:49) cracked the program's all-time list while Gage Beireis (14:58) ran his first sub 15:00 for an eight-place effort. Nearly 70 runners were in the field.
- Madi Brokaw registered a new PR in the pole vault, clearing exactly three meters even (9-10). Findlay had the top-four finishers in that event.
- Vincent Zeren performed nicely on the straightaway, covering the 100 meters in 11.13 and then 200 in a smooth 22.71 seconds.
- Colin White broke 60 seconds in the 400 hurdles, covering the grueling solo lap in 59.64.
- Emma Klosterman finished 9th of 27 in the high jump, and 13th of 44 in the long jump.
- Ravyn Goodson made her debut in the hammer throw, posting a mark of just over 100 feet (30.54m) during her first time.
- Brant Yocum snuck a top-10 finish in the steeplechase while Garret Miller, a true wizard on the clock during the home women's lacrosse game earlier in the day, was less than a second behind.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Cardinals will only send one runner to the All-Ohio Championships, and instead turn primary attention to hosting their "Twighlight" meet back on campus next weekend. Action in/around Memorial Stadium is scheduled for Friday evening.
